similar problem here

I use hardy alpha 3 i386, and I have ati radeon x1600 card, the problem
is:

after installing the driver, and the required restart there is no gui,
the graphics card is obviously not initialized properly, and doing
control+alt+1,2,3... all shows a meshed matrix of text fields,... there
is no text, but only the places for text characters are in different
shades of white, and you can see where the cursor is blinking, and even
enter text, to move the cursor, ... but you can't read the text.

then I went to recovery mode, and the automatic xfix did not work, but
only did:

sudo aticonfig --initial -f
-f forces new device section,...

afterwards, I finally get to gui and tell the restricted manager to USE
the driver, and once more, the story happens,...

when I open the "damaged" xorg.conf after checking the driver in
restricted manager IT DOESN'T HAVE the device section.
