Hi, it seems that Sam is right ;) I tried to comment the line
app.button_preferences.hide() from the activation.py file (/usr/lib/python2.5/site- packages/AppInstall/activation.py) and the searching for suitable codecs from Totem Movie Player went without any error. The application found some codecs, which I didn'y try to install, but anyway, the crash did not appear since the line is commented. Somehow the patch didn't work for me when I tried to apply it with the 'patch' command, so I commented the line manually.
