Ok, I just booted again into hardy.

and those "fixes" work

sudo hdparm -w /dev/hdc
sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

the -w1 was wrong...

Could this be automated with a start-up script in /etc/init.d and link
it to the standard startup levels?
