Based on the error messages I have seen so far I have come to some provisional conclusions. 1. grub is not comfortable with the ubuntu strategy of using UUID instead of /dev/hdax. 2. The default grub behaviour of assuming (hd0,0) after the kernel isn't found tends to hide errors if (hd0,0) is actually valid. 3. The ubuntu grub installer needs some work.
