Regarding your issue, have you asked the manufacturer if they have drivers (even binary) for Linux ? It is not always obvious and sometimes they do. Letting the manufacturer know that you are using Ubuntu (or generally speaking, Linux) is also good practice in these cases. If you can also get other people to report their interest in having Ubuntu (or generic) Linux drivers, that may also help.
