Yeah, it's quite annoying when this happens :-/

I've attached a patch that adds a new background image (inverted
colours) and adds an option to the config screen to 'use dark
background'

note that gmail-notify has to be restarted for this option to take
effect, but that's also the case with changing languages as far as the
pop-up is concerned.

if you don't want to patch: d/l attached patch, extract
'background2.jpg' and save it as /usr/share/apps/gmail-
notify/background.jpg
