By the way, the ugly fix, when running on batteries calls hdparm with 1 as parameter which means spindown set to 5 seconds... wouldn't it be better to use $SPINDOWN_TIME which by default is set to 12 (i.e., 12*5 seconds)? This var is set in /etc/default/acpi-support
