Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

VLC (amd64) is unable to play 5.1 Sound

Hardware: Alsa Intel ICH5 AD1888 with Logitech 5.1 Speakers

VLC Output device hw:0:0 or surround:51

When switching VLC in audio menu to "5.1" the sound stutters, no matter
if the dvd output 5.1, stereo, dts is choosen.

Started via terminal the following errors comes with the stutter

libdvdread: Found 2 VTS's
libdvdread: Elapsed time 0
[00000345] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:448000

The surround:51 works well with mplayer and songbird, the seems to be in
alsa or vlc itself.

Can someone confirm this?
