I got X up and running, it seemed that the xorg.conf reverted back to
the "ati" driver instead of the "fglrx" driver.

I commentented out the "dri" line.

This is what I think is the root cause for the X issue. I advise to
check for fglrx dependency during the upgrade process or more users will
have a nasty suprise when they upgrade.
