I had a similar problem. Changing the preview thumbnail to "never" solved the problem. On an educated guess I removed three ".TIF" files to a separate directory and turned thumbnails back on. Nautilus hangs quite religiously if I try to access the directory with the ".TIF" files in it. Nice and reproducible.
