No this is not an issue anymore. What happened is that I had xubuntu desktop running while I tried to install the updates. After uninstalling xubuntu desktop and reinstalling the Ubuntu desktop It worked fine. Unfortunately that computer was the only one running Ubuntu and its motherboard recently bit the dust so now it doesn't work at all. It isn't Ubuntu's fault as it couldn't use the secondary Ide channel anyway. Thank you for your concern.
