Ah, your first message "Middle-click opens the URL in the clipboard" was diffuse, as it could be understood like the URL of the tab would be opened in the clipboard, whatever that was supposed to mean. Now I see that you meant that the URL in the clipboard would be opened in the tab, and you're right, that's what happened.
