I've just done a clean install of hardy alpha3 (+ updates) and the
problem definitely persists. In its current state, my laptop has been
almost unusable for important work under ubuntu for far too long, and
i've about had it. It even locked up the first time I tried to post
here. Anyway, if it isn't resolved by the time hardy is released, I'm
afraid I'll have to abandon ubuntu. While it is nice to have the new
splashy 3d features, when systems crash with the severity, frequency,
and duration before a solution we have here, I feel that things should
be rolled back to the last know stable version. Yes, it may require
other packages to be downgraded, but IT WILL WORK. The other solution is
to add a notice during installation "Sorry, Ubuntu does not work with
your hardware. Please install Windows or try another distribution."

(Sorry for the rant -- not that helpful I know, but as I said, I've basically
had it. I do (did) like ubuntu and have been basically linux-only for a decade
and I hate having to think "maybe I should boot up Windows to get some work
done since at least it won't crash" :) )
Good luck tracking this issue down!
