** Description changed: [ Impact ] * mpdecimal was previously removed from Ubuntu after Lunar, due to the fact that it was removed from Debian. The reason was that mpdecimal was only used as a build dependency for CPython, and at the time CPython had started to vendor the required lib (libmpdec-dev) [0]. * Since then CPython has reversed course and decided to default to - building with the system version of libmpdec-dev, and plans t oremove + building with the system version of libmpdec-dev, and plans to remove the vendored version in python 3.16 [1]. * Consequently, mpdecimal was added back to Debian and reappeared in Ubuntu starting with plucky [2]. * Without libmpdec-dev, it won't be possible to build python >= 3.16 on noble without fetching the library from another source. [ Test Plan ] * Ensure autopkgtests pass and package installs * Build CPython 3.15 using the system libmpdec-dev To ensure adding this library does not break python3.12 in noble: * Ensure python3.12 builds in -proposed as normal, and does not pull in the new libmpdec-dev package, or default to using system mpdecimal. To ensure series upgrades work: - * A do-release-upgrade from jammy to noble and noble to resolute will - be conducted. + * A do-release-upgrade from jammy to noble and noble to resolute will + be conducted. [ Where problems could occur ] * This is another package to maintain in noble * It could be possible that other packages could default to building with system mpdecimal, with the list being r (wrapper package), elixir (wrapper package), php (ext-decimal), lua (lmpdecimal), which could introduce behaviour changes if these were packaged in private ppas already. [ Other Info ] * I've just done a minimal backport of the package from resolute, which is itself just synced from Debian [0]: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1056785 [1]: https://docs.python.org/3/deprecations/c-api-pending-removal-in-3.16.html [2]: https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mpdecimal/refs/
