Public bug reported: A change[1] introduced in c-ares 1.34.7 make parsing of name compression in RDATA more strict. This breaks sssd systems joined to a samba AD controller that use samba's internal DNS implementation.
sssd logs errors such as: (2026-11-03 18:31:34): [be[samba.internal]] [resolve_srv_done] (0x0040): [RID#10] Unable to resolve SRV [1432158238]: SRV lookup error and then sssd goes offline. This was later tweaked[2] in c-ares, and the change is part of the new release 1.34.9[3]. 1. https://github.com/c-ares/c-ares/commit/d6eba6933e71ff8d854d39ce46deb511c18a9cc6 2. https://github.com/c-ares/c-ares/pull/1326 3. https://github.com/c-ares/c-ares/releases#:~:text=accept%20legacy%20compressed%20RDATA%20names ** Affects: c-ares (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Fix Committed ** Affects: c-ares (Ubuntu Stonking) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: c-ares (Ubuntu Tenacious) Importance: Undecided Status: Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2172870 Title: strict parsing of name compression in RDATA breaks sssd with samba ad To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/c-ares/+bug/2172870/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
