Public bug reported:
Hardware: HP 250 G9 15.6" (board 8A1D), BIOS F.56, Intel 12th gen Alder Lake
(Iris Xe, i915),
NVMe Samsung MZVLQ512HBLU, Wi-Fi Intel AX210 (replaced the original Realtek
RTL8822CE),
16 GB RAM (HP memory diagnostics: passed).
OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS.
Problem:
The system hard-freezes while idle (awake, screen blanked by idle timeout, no
user activity).
The journal stops abruptly with no error before the freeze, the fan goes to
full speed,
keyboard/power LED do not respond, and a forced power-off is required.
kdump is enabled with kernel.softlockup_panic=1 and kernel.hardlockup_panic=1,
but nothing is captured (no dump in /var/crash), so it seems to be a complete
hardware-level lockup.
Kernel comparison (same machine, same configuration):
- 7.0.0-31: stable for 7 days with the boot parameters below. s2idle
suspend/resume works.
- 7.0.0-34 / 7.0.0-38: s2idle suspend never completes (system hangs while
entering suspend,
power LED steady), plus idle freezes.
- 7.0.0-42: s2idle mostly works again, but one idle freeze after ~31 hours
(with all parameters
below active) and one failed resume from s2idle a day later.
Boot parameters that made 7.0.0-31 stable:
pcie_aspm=off intel_idle.max_cstate=3 nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500
i915.enable_psr=0
Removing only pcie_aspm=off on 7.0.0-31 brought the idle freeze back after ~45
hours.
On 7.0.0-42 all these parameters are verified active (cpuidle states: POLL C1E
C6,
"PCIe ASPM is disabled", nvme latency 5500), yet the freeze still occurs.
The problem started after upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04 (kernel 7.0 series) in July
2026.
I can test new kernels and provide additional logs if needed.
