I believe I found the cause: the shipped `wg` profile (/etc/apparmor.d/wg) does not include <abstractions/consoles>, so writes to the controlling terminal (/dev/pts/*) are denied silently. Anything that writes directly to a TTY gets nothing, while pipes and redirects to files work.
