Another kernel Oops followed by a complete system freeze – 2026-10-26, 16:54:26 CET
Unfortunately, another severe kernel failure occurred today on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with kernel 6.8.0-147-generic. Initially, the mouse pointer stopped responding. It subsequently became movable again, but the desktop and the rest of the system remained unresponsive. A hardware reset was required. The previous boot's persistent journal contains the following kernel Oops: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000 #PF: supervisor write access in kernel mode Oops: 0002 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI CPU: 5 PID: 752793 Comm: gnome-shell Not tainted 6.8.0-147-generic #147-Ubuntu RIP: 0010:alloc_file+0x82/0x170 The call trace includes: alloc_file alloc_file_pseudo __anon_inode_getfile anon_inode_getfile sync_file_alloc sync_file_create dma_buf_export_sync_file dma_buf_ioctl __x64_sys_ioctl Unlike the previously reported Oops in update_blocked_averages(), this failure occurred in the context of GNOME Shell performing a DMA-BUF synchronization ioctl. The same boot also recorded multiple gedit crashes involving libgtk-3.so.0.2409.32. No PStore records were available after the hardware reset. However, the kernel Oops was preserved in the persistent system journal, which is attached. Given the repeated kernel failures, complete system freezes, and graphical session instability, I would appreciate investigation of the DMA-BUF/graphics synchronization path and possible relationships to the previously reported AMDGPU issue #2164910. I am not claiming that AMDGPU is the confirmed root cause.
