Public bug reported:
GDM login screen fails to return after LDAP user logout on Ubuntu 26.04
Description: On an Ubuntu 26.04 workstation using LDAP via nslcd, GDM sometimes
fails to return to the login screen after a user logs out. The user session
closes successfully, but GDM’s transient greeter session fails to register.
Logs show the greeter running under one UID while systemd tries to create
/run/user/ for the next UID, which it cannot resolve (Unknown user). GDM
retries and eventually gives up.
The LDAP configuration and authentication work. Installing systemd-userdbd
alone did not fix the issue. Disabling nscd’s passwd cache (enable-cache passwd
no) and restarting nscd and GDM resolved it on the affected workstation.
Expected: GDM returns to the login screen after each logout.
Actual: GDM fails to start the greeter. Leaving the user with a frozen cursor;
the user cannot use TTY but SSH login is possible.
Workaround: Disabling nscd’s passwd cache (enable-cache passwd no) and
restarting nscd and GDM resolved the issue on the affected workstation.
** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
