** Description changed: [ Impact ] Resolute (26.04) will be the last LTS to *fully* support armhf as an - architecture. Prevent any users where armhf is the primary (controller) - architecture from upgrading away from 26.04. Users with armhf as a - foreign arch (e.g. arm64 primary) will still be permitted to upgrade. + architecture. Prevent any users where armhf is an active architecture + (whether primary or foreign) from upgrading away from 26.04. [ Test plan ] On an arm64 host, start an Ubuntu resolute for server armhf instance, then attempt to upgrade it to stonking: * lxc launch ubuntu:r/armhf uru-test * lxc shell uru-test * apt update * apt full-upgrade -y * reboot # (if required) * do-release-upgrade - Note upgrade offers to proceed, quit before it does so + Note upgrade offers to proceed, quit before it does so. * do-release-upgrade --proposed Note upgrade refuses to proceed Still on the arm64 host, start an Ubuntu resolute for server arm64 instance, add armhf as a foreign arch and re-run the above test: * lxc launch ubuntu:r uru-test2 * lxc shell uru-test2 * dpkg --add-architecture armhf * Follow above tests from "apt update" - Check that, even on proposed version, upgrade is permitted to proceed - without error. + Check that upgrade refuses to proceed in proposed version. [ Where things could go wrong ] The biggest risk is permitting a user to move off an LTS onto an interim with an (ultimately) shorter support life-span than the LTS they left. Given only armhf is being made partial, the test-case should adequately - cover this. We also cover the case of armhf being a foreign-arch, which - we currently permit through (under the assumption the base system is - still fully covered). + cover this. We also cover the case of armhf being a foreign-arch. If the + decision is taken that armhf will remain as a partial arch come 28.04 + LTS, we can relax this restriction at a later date, but as this is still + unclear at present for the time being all armhf upgrades must be denied.
