** Description changed: [ Impact ] The first-boot wizard allows changing the hostname, but blocks progress until a valid hostname is entered. As part of checking whether the hostname is valid, it also performs a network scan of other visible names in the local network and disallows configuring a hostname that already exists in the local network. Unfortunately, this network check accidentally also includes the current machine, making it impossible to keep the hostname that was pre-configured earlier at install time. This setup wizard only shows on first-boot if a user is not configured on the system, so the problem normally only manifests when you configure a hostname but no user at install time. [ Test Plan ] We'll test on a pre-configured system for simplicity, forcing the first- boot wizard to appear. 1. Reboot to GRUB 2. Append "gnome.initial-setup=1" to the kernel cmdline 3. Boot 4. Verify that you've reached the first-boot wizard 5. Navigate through the wizard up to the account configuration page 6. Configure the account full-name and username - -> the hostname entry will pre-fill to match the username + -> the hostname entry will pre-fill to match the username 7. Configure the hostname to match what was already configured 8. Verify that the button to proceed to the next page is clickable - -> but stay in this page + -> but stay in this page 9. Empty the hostname entry 10. Verify again that the button to proceed to the next page is clickable 11. Complete the wizard 12. Verify that the hostname is indeed unchanged: - $ hostname + $ hostname [ Where problems could occur ] Problems would manifest in the account page of the first-boot wizard in Ubuntu Desktop. This wizard is normally only reachable when you did not configure any - user at install time. + user at install time. This is generally the case for preinstalled + images, like resolute-preinstalled-desktop-arm64+raspi.img.xz. That also + means that the first-boot wizard is going to be tested again during + image validation for 26.04.2. We're **not** going to verify that the network discovery logic keeps working because that's affected by another bug that prevents it from working properly, so regression testing would find it equally broken.
