As worked out in the comments here, this was not a chuck bug: the X
server's evdev driver was grabbing the keyboard and mouse, and that was
fixed in evdev 2.1 / xserver 1.5.3 back in 2008.
For anyone finding this today: current chuck reads joysticks/gamepads
via /dev/input/js*, which works for normal users out of the box.
Keyboards and mice are read via /dev/input/event*, which is deliberately
restricted to root and group "input" because reading a keyboard's event
device captures all keystrokes system-wide. Chuck reports this clearly
("please verify you have read permissions to input device ..."). Please
do not add yourself to the input group to get around it. Instead use
chuck's KBHit class for keyboard input, or grant access to one dedicated
controller device with a udev uaccess rule. This is now documented in
/usr/share/doc/chuck/README.Debian (from Debian 1.5.5.8-3).
Closing as Invalid, since it was not a bug in chuck.
