Fixed in Hardy, upgraded mom's machine, everything is fine. Well, the hardy update was a little rocky, but she rebooted ok. FYI, aforementioned local laptop was failing to boot 2.6.24 - 2.6.22 booted fine. ... then again, the local laptop was also freezing without acpi=off soo, not best case for comparing.
