It happened again: gnome-shell segfaulted on Wayland on 2026-09-19 at
21:43. It killed every application in the session again. Same packages
(gnome-shell 46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.14, libmutter-14-0
46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.16), kernel 7.0.0-31. That makes 2 session-killing
crashes in 3 days.
This time the stack is clobbered too. The PC jumped into stack memory
(0x7ffd...) from a GLib main-loop dispatch, and the JS stack only shows
ui/init.js:21 (idle main loop, no extension code). That fits your "stack
frame clobbered by a pixman function" diagnosis.
About testing without extensions: I tried, but I can't run without them
day to day (Dash to Panel is my only taskbar). Also, in the first crash
the GDM greeter's gnome-shell (uid 120) segfaulted 7 seconds after mine,
and the greeter runs no user extensions. So I don't think extensions are
the cause.
Setup: Intel Raptor Lake iGPU (i915) drives all displays. The NVIDIA RTX
4070 (580.173.02) doesn't drive any output. Two HiDPI outputs at integer
scale 2 (eDP 3200x2000@165 + DP 2560x1600@60/120), no fractional
scaling.
Could e0d02d0e2ed785 ("region: Make APIs using
mtk_region_create_rectangles empty-region-safe") be backported to noble
as an SRU? I checked it against mutter 46.2's mtk/mtk/mtk-region.c. 4 of
5 hunks apply cleanly, including the one for
mtk_region_apply_matrix_transform_expand. The only failing hunk targets
a function that doesn't exist in 46.2. Upgrading to 26.04 isn't possible
for me yet: do-release-upgrade doesn't offer it. Since this is Wayland,
every crash takes the whole session and all unsaved work with it.
