I can now confirm that this bug remains with the latest ASUS BIOS update, to American Megatrends v: 3212 .
I appreciate that Ubuntu recommends that people not use hibernate because there are too many things that could go wrong between diverse hardware, BIOS, and the Ubuntu kernel and related. So I'm not surprised that this bug has gotten no human feedback. Still, this bug only appears in the latest Kubuntu kernel, 6.8.0-139-generic. I had no problem with hibernating daily, sometimes for a week or longer, with kernel 6.8.0-138-generic all the way back to kernel 6.8.0-87, almost a year ago. It seems likely that a solution exists within easy reach of kernel engineers. I will also say that for productive uses, hibernation makes a big difference. It's the difference between starting each day exactly where I left off the last day versus spending a good chunk of time fixing where windows have been incorrectly placed by session manager, closing windows / applications that should not have been opened, and opening a bunch of applications that session manager fails to open. In short, the difference between a smooth start of the day and unscrambling a mess. I suspect I'm not the only person who works with many desktops, applications, and windows open and wants to keep these open as I work on various projects through the day.
