A couple of thoughts here.

1. The symbols file changes look wrong. Shouldn't the #MINVER# fields be
the *package* version? Why are they $((upstream_version - 1))?

2. Is it really necessary to export this in the public API at all? Are
external programs expected to start using this in stable releases?

I understand that makes sense for new releases upstream, but for SRU, is
it possible to just move the new function to an internal helper? That
way you can ignore the nonsense with the symbols file to begin with.
