Public bug reported:
Hardware-accelerated video playback is corrupted and severely laggy after
upgrading to kernel 7.0.0-30-generic.
When playing a movie, the video contains many square-shaped macroblocking
artifacts and playback stutters. The desktop and display output otherwise
work.

- VRAM: 2 GB
- Connection: DisplayPort
- Operating system: Linux Mint 22.2, based on Ubuntu 24.04 Noble
- Mesa: 25.2.8-0ubuntu0.24.04.2
- linux-firmware: 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.29
Regression:
- Kernel 6.17.0-40-generic: hardware video decoding works correctly
- Kernel 7.0.0-30-generic: video lags and displays corrupted square blocks
- Disabling hardware video decoding prevents the corrupted blocks
- The same operating system, Mesa packages, application, and video content
are used with both kernels
The GPU is detected and initialized under kernel 7.0.0-30. The kernel log
says:
- UVD firmware version 1.64 was found
- UVD initialized successfully
- VCE initialized successfully
- No GPU reset, timeout, firmware failure, or page fault is logged
The Radeon is bound to amdgpu:
01:00.0 AMD/ATI Bonaire XTX [Radeon R7 260X/360]
Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
This appears to be an amdgpu/UVD hardware-video-decoding regression introduced
between Ubuntu kernels 6.17.0-40 and 7.0.0-30.
Apport was unable to submit automatically. It reported:
"This does not seem to be an official Linux package."
The affected kernel package was installed from Ubuntu Noble's official
noble-updates/security repositories as linux-generic-hwe-24.04.
