This is only happening on these small systems? Are they failing in the same place?
It looks like the actual installation is succesful but then it fails in the curtin post-install phase where checkbox is installed. 32GB of RAM is more than enough for this, it should be fine (and has been fine) on much smaller systems though. I wonder if resetting the maas preseed to the default one will fix this (you'll have to then manually add the cert PPA and manually install canonical-certification-server. Look in /var/snap/maas/current/preseeds/ on the maas server for something like curtin_userdata.orig or curtin_userdata-TIMESTAMP. Either way you want to use the oldest / smallest one. save the current curtin_userdata file and use the one that does not have all the extra cert code in it and try installing on those small systems after that.
