Public bug reported:
After upgrading to Linux 6.8.0-117-generic, the graphical desktop
becomes unusable on my HP EliteDesk 800 G1 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 640
OEM (GK107) using the proprietary NVIDIA 470.256.02 driver.
Symptoms:
- Boot reaches the Ubuntu/GDM graphical login very slowly.
- The login screen is partially unresponsive.
- Username/password fields appear only after suspend/wake cycles.
- After login, the normal GNOME desktop does not load correctly.
- The system is practically unusable with kernel 6.8.0-117-generic.
Workaround:
- Booting the previous kernel 6.8.0-111-generic works normally.
- I set GRUB to boot 6.8.0-111-generic by default.
Relevant details:
- Working kernel: 6.8.0-111-generic
- Broken kernel: 6.8.0-117-generic
- GPU: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GT 640 OEM]
- NVIDIA driver: 470.256.02
- DKMS status shows NVIDIA 470.256.02 installed for both kernels.
- Log pattern during the broken boot: repeated “gnome-shell: Page flip failed:
Only single-CRTC updates supported”.
This appears to be a regression involving Linux 6.8.0-117-generic,
GNOME/GDM, and the legacy NVIDIA 470 driver.
