This bug is now partly in the actual release of 26.04 LTS (Ubuntu Mate).
I don't know what was fixed, but the main underlying issue is gone, and
the various g-apps start quickly, and xdg-desktop-portal.service is now
running.
BUT.... the comments in #3 still apply. XDG_SESSION_TYPE is still set to
wayland, and chromium-browser won't start unless this is corrected.
Btw, this bug is definitely NOT a duplicate of bug #2144855. On my
system, firefox always worked fine (and still does).
