I can confirm the bug. To reproduce just call: display /usr/share/backgrounds/Ubuntu-Simple_Human_1600x1200.png Or if you have graphicsmagick instead of imagemagck installed: gm display /usr/share/backgrounds/Ubuntu-Simple_Human_1600x1200.png
Using "-font fixed" is really an ugly workaround.
