Public bug reported:
In the current Ubuntu 26.04 development cycle, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
appears to start before the session environment variables (specifically
WAYLAND_DISPLAY and XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP) are fully exported to the
systemd user bus. As a result, the portal initializes in a "headless" or
"settings-only" mode.
This causes sandbox-mediated features in Snaps (Firefox, Thunderbird) to
fail, including:
Opening web links from Thunderbird to Firefox.
File picker dialogs for saving/uploading attachments.
Downloading files to local directories.
Observed Behavior (Logs):
When checking systemctl --user status xdg-desktop-portal-gnome immediately
after login, the following errors are present:

Workaround:
Manually restarting the service after the desktop is fully loaded resolves all
interaction issues:
systemctl --user restart xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
