Same "Buffer I/O error on device fd0" problem on my Dell Latitude C600 with Xubuntu 7.10.
It makes it past the error but the bottom 20% of the desktop is white (no image or anything happening there). I can install but it crashes when it's checking the file system before erasing the HD. I have to force the computer off. The *only" ubuntu OS that I've been able to boot from CD and install in ubuntu 6.06. All other ubuntus give some problem or other. I don't want to sound too demanding, but shouldn't the developers have a solution to this by now?
