Maybe you did the same mistake as I did, I have accidentally moved away /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko -- this file is not par of alsa, but of linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic. To get your symbols back, just move soundcore.ko to the original location, in case you lost it altogether, sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic should also do the trick..
