I used the gconf-editor to turn 'use time-policy' to false as mentioned in
previous comment and the issue was sorted out for me (i.e. no sleeping
automatically on battery and not hibernating on critical battery). However
another minor problem is that when it turned to sleep while left unattended
in battery mode, it went to hibernate as soon as I turned it on. Some
configuration must be there to tell hibernate not to count time when in
sleep mode.

FYI, I own a Lenovo 3000V100.
