Public bug reported:

Version: 1:1.0.0.82~ds-4

I'm using steam installer on debian unstable, but while I was using
Ubuntu, I had the same issue.

When launching `steam` from the cli, there's an ongoing percentage
indicated when an update occurs.

But when launching Steam from a gui (e.g. from overview/applications),
it simply appears not to work, while in reality it is updating in the
background.

Any kind of visual indicator that *something* is happening should be
there -- but, a progress bar would be awesome.

This issue is particularly bad on slow connections, because it may be
5-10 minutes before any visible action occurs from launching Steam.

** Affects: steam-installer (Ubuntu)

         Status: New
