Wow! the workaround works! I can rip again! This is Gutsy amd_64. Before inserting/removing the DVD, cdda2wav output was as below. After the DVD removal, I didn't get any of the errors that started after the "CDB:" line. Do these errors ring any bells for anybody? Does this just require some hdparm tweak?
