I can confirm this.

I think this is because aptitude wants to be clever and remove unneeded
dependencies. If you do a dist-upgrade, this might not work because
dependencies have probably changed quite a lot and aptitude can't deal
with it properly.

To resolve this problem i would just use apt-get dist-upgrade. It might
be a good idea to publish this in the (upgrading-) docs?
