Just for fun, I thought I'd try Kubuntu on the Acer TravelMate.
Partition layout was / and /home. Manual partitioning, as I suspected,
doesn't work there, either.

I've established that grub isn't getting installed (which I think we
already knew). However, if anyone *really, really* needs manual
partitioning on a BIOS device, grub can be installed and configured via
chroot.
