For anyone else reading this: my current work around is deactivating the
extension Desktop Icons NG extension as to not have to deal with the
impact of Ubuntu on Wayland.

I have had issues with other desktop extensions as well, but these had
all been 3rd party extensions and not items directly shown as System
Extensions. On the positive list that work are Clipboard Indicator, Dash
to Dock, Tiling Shell and Vitals.
