For anyone else reading this: my current work around is deactivating the extension Desktop Icons NG extension as to not have to deal with the impact of Ubuntu on Wayland.
I have had issues with other desktop extensions as well, but these had all been 3rd party extensions and not items directly shown as System Extensions.
