Of course you're allowed to use any driver you like. We just can't
accept bug reports on this site when the driver isn't from Ubuntu.

I suggest the way forward here is to remove the driver completely,
reboot and prove the same bug happens with the default driver. Then log
a new bug from the machine while it's in that state.

Then reinstall your preferred driver if the default driver isn't
suitable.
