Thanks Tormod Apologies for not filling in details, mine is not a fresh clean install, however:
The bug only started with XGL. Standard gnome-screensaver, with its gui options of 'Regard computer as idle' set to 2hours and 'Activite screen saver when idle', unchecked. In power manager all settings set to leave the screen alone - i.e. not blank or dim in either AC or Battery. I have edited settings in gconf to see if I can affect the blanking behaviour. and tried the the above (xorg) solution too.
