I too have a Toshiba Satellite R20 and have difficulties with suspend. It originally was turning everything off except the CPU fan and the power lights. I was able to get that fixed with the help of Peter from this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/139045.
I have not suffered from applications freezing, but I do get a message: "Sleep Problem: Your computer failed to suspend. Check the help file for common problems."
