I tried as you suggested, but dmesg shows nothing after a failed ls. However, I tried cp a testfile to the drive and it succeeded; and I was able to cp it back. I just cannot read the directories with ls, nor with any application I've tried (e.g. nautilus, rhythmbox).
I then successfully cd to the mounted server (where ls again returned an I/O error) and successfully launched gedit to edit the file I had cp'd to the NAS; when I tried to save the file I received an error "Could not save the file “/mnt/musicserver/testfile2.txt”.Error renaming temporary file: Input/output error" However, I was able to successful "save as" to the NAS and the cp the edited file back to my machine. After all the above, there is still nothing notable in dmesg, but I did find the following in the log files which might be helpful: 18:18:44 tracker-extract: (tracker-extract-3:106881): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: 18:18:44.177: Error creating IO channel for /proc/self/mountinfo: Invalid argument (g-io-error-quark, 13) 18:18:43 gnome-shell: Window manager warning: Ping serial 63431341 was reused for window W522, previous use was for window W541. 18:18:38 gvfsd-network: g_file_info_set_content_type: assertion 'content_type != NULL' failed 18:18:38 gvfsd-wsdd: Failed to spawn the wsdd daemon: Failed to execute child process “wsdd” (No such file or directory) 18:18:38 gvfsd-network: g_ref_string_new_intern: assertion 'str != NULL' failed 18:18:38 gvfsd-smb-brows: Kerberos auth with 'family@WORKGROUP' (WORKGROUP\family) to access '192.168.4.1' not possible (note that I was using my manual mountpoint to do the above tests, not gvfs, though I did have the Files app open at the same time) I also found earlier in the logfile: 8:00:20 gvfsd-smb-brows: cli_rpc_pipe_open_noauth: rpc_pipe_bind for pipe srvsvc failed with error NT_STATUS_RPC_PROTOCOL_ERROR 17:59:15 gnome-logs: Error retrieving the sender timestamps: Cannot assign requested address 17:58:11 systemd: Started vte-spawn-fb65037f-f8ff-4752-a5b8-06deb05095f1.scope - VTE child process 105403 launched by gnome-terminal-server process 105396. 17:58:11 dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=2531] Successfully activated service 'org.gnome.Terminal' 17:58:11 systemd: Starting gnome-terminal-server.service - GNOME Terminal Server... 17:58:11 dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=2531] Activating via systemd: service name='org.gnome.Terminal' unit='gnome-terminal-server.service' requested by ':1.544' (uid=1000 pid=105390 comm="/usr/bin/gnome-terminal.real --wait" label="unconfined") 17:58:11 systemd: Started app-gnome-x\x2dterminal\x2demulator-105387.scope - Application launched by gsd-media-keys. 17:57:12 gnome-character: JS LOG: Characters Application exiting 17:57:03 dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=2531] Successfully activated service 'org.gnome.Logs' 17:57:02 gnome-shell: Received error from D-Bus search provider org.gnome.Terminal.desktop: Gio.IOErrorEnum: Cannot invoke method; proxy is for the well-known name org.gnome.Terminal without an owner, and proxy was constructed with the G_DBUS_PROXY_FLAGS_DO_NOT_AUTO_START flag 17:57:00 gnome-character: JS LOG: Characters Application started 17:57:00 gnome-shell: Received error from D-Bus search provider org.gnome.Terminal.desktop: Gio.IOErrorEnum: Cannot invoke method; proxy is for the well-known name org.gnome.Terminal without an owner, and proxy was constructed with the G_DBUS_PROXY_FLAGS_DO_NOT_AUTO_START flag 17:57:00 dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=2531] Successfully activated service 'org.gnome.Characters' 17:57:00 gnome-shell: Received error from D-Bus search provider org.gnome.Terminal.desktop: Gio.IOErrorEnum: Cannot invoke method; proxy is for the well-known name org.gnome.Terminal without an owner, and proxy was constructed with the G_DBUS_PROXY_FLAGS_DO_NOT_AUTO_START flag 17:57:00 dbus-daemon: [session uid=1000 pid=2531] Activating service name='org.gnome.Settings.SearchProvider' requested by ':1.34' (uid=1000 pid=2742 comm="/usr/bin/gnome-shell" label="unconfined") 17:54:10 gvfsd-smb-brows: cli_rpc_pipe_open_noauth: rpc_pipe_bind for pipe srvsvc failed with error NT_STATUS_RPC_PROTOCOL_ERROR -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2099721 Title: File I/O access to SMB1 error - regression?
