Public bug reported:

When running IntelliJ IDEA in an X session with Mutter and an nVidia
graphics card and proprietary drivers some dialogs have a semi-
transparent background making it hard to read any text in those.

The bug was originally reported here:

Then an issue was filed against Mutter and successfully resolved:

The resolution has been confirmed by several people building Mutter from source 
as is supported by comments here:
