To settle all confusion/questions, I simply tried grub (2.06-2ubuntu7.2)
and it wasn't able to recognize either a thin-lvm partition nor a thick
lvm partition. I did

set root='lvmid/xxx/yyy'
ls /

It reported "no server specified" for the thin-lvm and "unknown filesystem"
for the snapshot.

note that

grub> ls

lists all but the snapshot and thin filesystems. (I have no other
'exotic' filesystem)

I feel I have to respectfully suggest #19 as the better solution (YMMV)
