I experienced the same problem. When OOo first came up, buttons and menus appeared normally. However, as soon as I click on a section on the menu bar (e.g. Format), every section except Format disappeared. Further, when I moused over each of the entries in the menu, only the entry under the mouse was visible -- everything else had disappeared. Same thing for buttons -- only the button under the mouse was visible. Moving the gtk* files solved the problem, for whatever reason.
