Public bug reported:

Bug Report: Fingerprint Enrollment Issues on Ubuntu 24.10

1. Ubuntu Version
Ubuntu 24.10

2. Package Version
`fprintd` 1.94.4-1

3. Expected Behavior
Fingerprint enrollment should work seamlessly, allowing me to use fingerprint
authentication for login without any issues.

4. Actual Behavior
- During fingerprint enrollment, the process fails almost immediately.
  - Sometimes, the error appears before I touch the fingerprint scanner.
  - The error message displayed is: "Fingerprint device disconnected."
- After closing the fingerprint enrollment window by clicking "Cancel," another
error appears:
  - "Failed to claim fingerprint device ElanTech fingerprint sensor: the device
is already claimed by another process."

5. Troubleshooting Attempts
1. Identifying the Claiming Process
   - Ran the following command to check if any process is using the fingerprint
device:

     lsof /dev/bus/usb/* | grep fprint

     - This returned no results.

2. Researching Online
   - Found similar reports on other distributions (e.g., Fedora).
   - Followed the guide
https://safereddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/12dv9ce/i_finally_got_my_fingerprint_working_on_fedora_so/?rdt=64246),
 but encountered issues:
     - The file `polkit-1` was missing from `/etc/pam.d/`.

3. Manual Enrollment
   - Attempted to enroll a fingerprint via the terminal.
     - Multiple attempts resulted in the same error messages before one
enrollment succeeded.
     - However, the fingerprint was not recognized at the login screen.

4. Testing in the Settings App
   - After enrolling the fingerprint via the terminal, the Settings app
displayed it as enrolled but allowed for "re-enrollment."
   - Re-enrollment from the app reproduced the "Fingerprint device
disconnected" error and deleted the enrolled fingerprint, disabling fingerprint
login.

5. Restarting the Service
   - Restarted `fprintd` using:

     sudo systemctl restart fprintd

     - This had no noticeable effect.

6. Additional Information
- The fingerprint scanner is an ElanTech fingerprint sensor with an ID of
04f3:0c6e.
- The issue appears to affect multiple distributions (e.g., Fedora), suggesting
a broader problem with the `fprintd` package or its interaction with certain
hardware.
