Thank you, Andreas. I've had a checkered history with pg_upgradecluster; the last upgrade (to 22.04LTS, PG14) worked fine, if I remember correctly, but all other post-LTS upgrades failed for me. Is it possible that setting a non-default password for user postgres might cause a problem? - the online advice on setting a password for user postgres is not unanimous! There have been references above to possible postgresql "extensions" that might have caused problems - can you give any example of what was in mind? I believe I have no non-official postgres-related utilities, but it's difficult to be absolutely sure of that ...
