bluez 5.78 appears to resolve this for me (at least symptom wise, haven't checked the first attempt logs since didn't notice any bad behavior). is the fix cherry picked in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/2084337 the same thing? haven't tried downgrading to that package version since 5.78 is working...
